Bernard Garner

Bernard is the Director General of Nexus, Tyne and Wear's Passenger Transport Executive. He was previously the Director of Development.

His career in transport began in Yorkshire as a Civil Engineer for the then West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council although even in these halcyon days of motorway building he was responsible for developing and implementing public transport alternatives. He moved from Yorkshire to Fife Regional Council in 1978 specialising in public transport planning and operation and subsequently joined Nexus in 1986. Bernard’s initial appointment was as Chief Services Co-ordinator dealing with the implementation of the new bus regime arising from the Transport Act 1985; he subsequently was appointed as Head of Planning and Development in 1994 and as Director of Development in 1999 where he was responsible, amongst other things, for corporate and strategic planning within Nexus.
