Tim Larner - Director of the pteg Support Unit

Tim was appointed in 2003 to head the newly formed Support Unit. The Unit works closely with PTE Directors in shaping the contribution PTEs make to the development of national policies affecting urban transport. The Unit acts as the main focal point for engagement on national issues with Central Government and other key stakeholders. It also supports and advises the Passenger Transport Authority Special Interest Group (PTA SIG) which brings together elected representatives from the six PTAs and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport. Within the Unit, Tim takes the lead on transport planning and funding, bus policy and concessionary travel issues.

Tim’s early career was in transport engineering consultancy, although he has spent most of his career in the public sector, first with West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council – from 1977 - and then with West Yorkshire PTE. During this period Tim held various roles in policy, rail planning and local strategy development.

He joined transport consultants, Steer Davies Gleave in 1997, becoming an Associate in 2002, and played a leading role in the development of the company’s transport planning work with local authorities, transport information provision and voluntary behaviour change.

Tim is a civil engineer by background, and holds Masters degrees in transport planning and business administration.
